Muscle twitching can be due to various causes. It can occur in the context of an epileptic seizure, or in certain movement disorders (e.g. essential tremor, dystonia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, etc.). In all these disorders, there is almost always also a movement effect in the adjacent joints.

When twitching occurs exclusively at rest or during sleep, restless legs syndrome or other sleep-related movement disorders should be considered.
