Special consultation for headache

In this consultation, patients with headaches are examined and treatment and other forms of care are arranged. The patients often suffer from tension headaches or migraines.

Headaches can sometimes be an expression of a dangerous disease, such as a brain tumor, meningitis or an impending intracranial hemorrhage. This is another reason why early neurological assessment of these symptoms is very important.

You should always be referred to a neurologist if

  • your pain is occurring for the first time
  • you regularly suffer from headaches more than two or three times a month or they last longer than two or three days
  • your headache is accompanied by serious or unusual symptoms such as speech disorders, numbness or arm or leg weakness
  • the duration and severity of your symptoms increase despite treatment
  • you are no longer responding to the painkillers you have been using or you need to constantly increase the dose.

Headaches can usually be treated effectively with individually tailored medication. It is important to start treatment early and to select the medication according to the patient’s needs. Sometimes patients have to be treated with medications that are also used for other conditions (antiepileptics, antidepressants). This requires tact, empathy and experience from the treating physician and active cooperation from the patient, for example, by keeping a headache diary.
