Eye movements are caused by the eye muscles. These ensure that the right and left eye are always looking at the same object. These movements can be disturbed, however, for example due to damage to the eye muscle itself, the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles, or the nerves in the head that supply the eye. In these cases, two different images are seen. Seeing double images is also different from general visual disorders.

Cause

Double vision can be a warning sign of a serious neurological disease: in particular, a stroke, cerebral haemorrhage, multiple sclerosis, brain tumors, myasthenia, or nerve infections such as neuroborreliosis or shingles. They can also indicate various other conditions, such as nerve damage associated with diabetes, as well as alcohol dependency, poisoning, or a possible vitamin B-12 deficiency. To accurately determine the causes of double vision, an examination by an ophthalmologist is often required. In many cases, however, they should be checked by a neurologist to ensure that a serious nervous system disease is not missed.
