Acute symptoms (acute onset or episodic recurrence)

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Absence of thought, impaired consciousness
  • Déjà vu, jamais vu experiences
  • Acute thought disorder, confusion, disorientation
  • Sudden memory loss
  • Mood swings
  • Delusional perceptions (hallucinations etc.)

Chronic symptoms

  • Apathy
  • chronic thought disorder, confusion, disorientation (dementia, Alzheimer’s disease)
  • Sequelae of major brain injury (usually associated with physical and mental disability)

Causes

The causes can be manifold. In principle, any pathological change in the brain can cause a personality change (craniocerebral injury, tumor, stroke, meningitis, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, epilepsy etc.), but also metabolic influences (e.g. in diabetes, thyroid disease, liver or kidney failure) or intoxication.

The treatment depends on the underlying disease. In most cases, the sooner treatment begins, the greater the likelihood of a cure.
