Our botulinum toxin consultation mainly provides outpatient consultations, examination and treatment of patients with dystonia, other movement disorders, spasticity and hemifacial spasm. A range of preparations are used for this purpose (Botox®, Xeomin®, Dysport®, Neurobloc®).

The aim of treatment is usually to reduce muscle overactivity, which is caused by excessive activation from the nervous system, locally in the muscle. In other words, the transmission of nerve signals to the muscle is stopped locally in the muscle. Although botulinum toxin is very toxic, it is administered in very small doses (not even one millionth of a gram) and thus has a very targeted effect. Botulinum toxin has a large therapeutic window and hardly any side effects or interactions with other drugs. It takes a few days (3-14) to develop its full effect in the muscle. This usually wears off after about 3-6 months and follow-up treatment must then be provided.
